Frequently Asked Questions

New Membership Tier Questions

Where can I see the new membership tiers?

You can visit this page to see the new tiers. The first page is an overview with links to the unique features and benefits of each plan.

Why are you offering four different types of memberships?

We recognize that our alumni are a diverse group of individuals with different needs in different times of life with different goals, interests, affinities, geographies, stages of career development, and resources.

What is the difference between the various membership options?

All of the options are great, but the tiers allow you to choose a membership that is right for you, giving you control over the cost, the benefits, and the level of engagement.

  • BASIC: The no-frills gateway to Purdue Alumni
  • PLUS: The “traditional” membership, perfect for staying connected … and saving!
  • PROFESSIONAL: The membership to jump-start your career!
  • CAREER MAX: The ultimate way to take your career to new heights!

How do I know which membership option is the right one for me?

We encourage you to review the membership benefits in each tier to determine the best fit for your individual needs.

If you only want to attend Purdue Alumni events, show your Purdue pride, and support Purdue Alumni in the most economical way, then BASIC membership may be for you.

Looking for all those things in the BASIC membership but also want to stay connected through alumni networks, receive the award-winning Purdue Alumnus magazine, keep up to date on what’s happening across the University, and save up to 50% at thousands of retailers nationwide? Then PLUS membership may be your match.

The PROFESSIONAL membership offers all the benefits above plus additional benefits to help jump-start your career, such as online course discounts, career resources and tools, career development webinars, CliftonStrengths leadership assessment tool, and access to research databases.

CAREER MAX membership is perfect for those looking to take their career to new heights. In addition to all the benefits included in the other memberships, CAREER MAX provides unlimited access to LinkedIn Learning on-demand courses, higher discounts on online courses, resume review, one-on-one career counseling, and more!

What if I realize that I purchased the wrong membership — can I change to a different option?

Of course you can! We want you to find the membership package that fits your needs! If you want to change your selection, please contact our Purdue Alumni membership team and we will be happy to work with you to make sure we find the perfect fit. Please email alumnimembership@purdue.edu or call 800-414-1541 to change your membership selection.

I was planning to purchase a life membership — is there still time to purchase it before it is no longer offered?

Life membership will no longer be offered starting August 15, 2018. However, multi-year memberships are available at discounted rates. For example, you can save over 20% with a 10-year membership (compared to the single-year price). This added flexibility lets you move between membership offerings based on what is most valuable to you as your needs change.

Why are you discontinuing life membership?

With the need to deliver relevant membership offerings at different stages of life, combined with the need to maintain flexibility in programs and services offered, the life membership business model is simply no longer feasible. However, for those looking for longer-term membership, we now offer 3- and 10-year memberships at discounted rates.

Why are the PROFESSIONAL membership ($99) and CAREER MAX membership ($199) so expensive?

In a nutshell … because we’ve packed them with so many great benefits! Once you see the value of what we have included in those memberships, you will wonder why they are so cheap! But on a more serious note … the benefits associated with these levels do involve additional costs to the alumni association. Although we wish it wasn’t necessary, we do need to pass those costs on to our members (we ARE a nonprofit, after all). The price of these memberships is significantly lower than the market value of the benefits if you were to purchase them on your own.

Why did you eliminate the young alumni discount (35 years and under) and replace it with a recent grad discount (for those who received their first Purdue degree within the last five years)?

We realize that recent graduates often face similar financial challenges, regardless of their age at the time of graduation. The recent grad discount is intended to provide a more affordable opportunity for recent graduates to stay engaged with Purdue University and Purdue Alumni, something that benefits all alumni.

What are the member benefits for alumni living internationally?

Wherever you live or travel, near or far, the Purdue Alumni Association makes it easy for you to connect with fellow alumni, build professional relationships, attend special events, recruit local students, and contribute to the quality and progress of Purdue University. In addition, several of the new benefits in the PROFESSIONAL and CAREER MAX memberships are available to our international alumni.

Why do you only offer joint memberships at a discount for the PLUS membership option?

Quite simply, it comes down to economics. The already low price for BASIC membership prevents us from being able to offer a joint membership discount. As for the PROFESSIONAL and CAREER MAX memberships, not only are those benefits geared towards individuals, but the additional costs associated with all the benefits of those memberships do not make it feasible to offer discounts.

Current Member Upgrades

If you were a member before August 15, 2018, you are automatically a PLUS member for the remainder of your membership. PLUS benefits are similar to your previous membership.

If you are interested in upgrading to PROFESSIONAL or CAREER MAX, you can and it’s quite easy.

I’m an annual member. If I purchase a PROFESSIONAL OR CAREER MAX membership, what happens to my current paid membership?

Purchase a PROFESSIONAL or CAREER MAX membership now, and the remaining value of your current membership will automatically be applied to extend your new membership.

For example, if you are three months into an annual individual membership (now PLUS) and upgrade to a 1-year PROFESSIONAL membership, your PROFESSIONAL membership will begin now and will last 17 months (12 months for the PROFESSIONAL membership you purchase + 5 additional months from the remaining value of your current PLUS membership).

I’m a life member. If I purchase a PROFESSIONAL OR CAREER MAX membership, what happens to my life membership?

You automatically receive PLUS membership benefits for life, which is similar to the benefits you’ve been receiving. If you’d like to upgrade to PROFESSIONAL or CAREER MAX to take advantage of the new career-oriented benefits, you may do so for a nominal charge, as outlined below. At the end of the upgraded membership, you will automatically return to PLUS membership, unless you choose to purchase another upgrade.

Life Member Upgrade to PROFESSIONAL

  • 1-year $39
  • 3-year $99

Life Member Upgrade to CAREER MAX

  • 1-year $139
  • 3-year $359

Please contact us at alumnimembership@purdue.edu or 800-414-1541 if you have any questions.

Current Member Questions

I am currently a life member — what does the discontinuation of the life membership option mean for me?

Once a life member, ALWAYS a life member! You will retain lifetime membership status and will automatically transition to the new PLUS membership, which features the benefits you’ve come to know and love. So, from that standpoint, nothing really changes. However, you will have the option to upgrade to the PROFESSIONAL or CAREER MAX levels to take advantage of the new, career-oriented benefits provided in those membership levels on an annual basis for a nominal charge.

I am currently a life member on the five-year payment plan. Will I be allowed to complete my payments?

Yes! Like all good Boilermakers, we honor our commitments! All payment plans set up prior to August 15, 2018, will be honored. You will retain your life member status, as long as you complete your payment plan as scheduled. Your billing and payment schedule will remain the same.

I am currently a life member — will I receive fewer benefits now that you are putting me into a PLUS membership instead of the highest level of membership (CAREER MAX)?

You will receive all the benefits of the new PLUS membership level, which is very similar to your current membership. Additionally, you will have the option to upgrade to the PROFESSIONAL or CAREER MAX level on an annual basis, for a nominal charge, to take advantage of the new, career-oriented benefits not previously available to Purdue Alumni members.

I am currently an annual member — what does the change mean for me?

You will remain a current annual member and will transition to PLUS membership benefits, which are similar to your current benefits, for the duration of your current membership. You also have the option to upgrade to PROFESSIONAL or CAREER MAX membership, now or when your current membership expires, for a nominal charge.

I am currently an annual member — what do I do at renewal time?

On August 15, your membership will transition to PLUS membership for the duration of your current term. The membership benefits you have enjoyed in the past are included in the new PLUS membership. As the end of your membership approaches, you will receive notifications that your membership is about to expire. You can renew your PLUS membership or switch to another membership option that best meets your needs. We encourage you to review all the membership benefits and options to determine the best fit.

I am a current annual member in the middle of my membership — what if I want to switch to PROFESSIONAL or CAREER MAX membership?

Go ahead and purchase that PROFESSIONAL or CAREER MAX membership today. We will add additional months to your new membership based on the prorated value remaining on your current membership. Feel free to reach out to the Purdue Alumni membership team if you have questions regarding your current membership and how that would transition to a new level. Please email us at alumnimembership@purdue.edu or call us at 800-414-1541.
